Details

Amfleet II cars are a class of single-level intercity passenger coaches built by the Budd Company for Amtrak between 1981 and 1983. They were developed as a second generation of the Amfleet design and were specifically intended for long-distance services across the eastern United States.

Amtrak ordered 150 Amfleet II cars in 1980, with the first delivered in October 1981 and the final cars entering service in June 1983. These vehicles were also notable for being the last intercity passenger cars built by Budd, one of the most famous American rolling stock manufacturers.

Compared with the earlier Amfleet I cars used on corridor services, the Amfleet II was redesigned to provide greater comfort for long journeys. The cars feature larger windows for improved views, increased legroom and folding leg rests, along with seating designed for extended travel.

Amfleet II coaches have been widely used on many of Amtrak’s long-distance trains east of the Mississippi River, often working alongside Viewliner sleeping cars and other equipment. Even decades after their introduction, many remain in service and continue to form an important part of Amtrak’s single-level passenger fleet.
