Details

The EMD F40PH is an iconic American diesel-electric locomotive, best known for defining the Amtrak era of passenger trains. Although retired from Amtrak service, the F40PH operated for over 20 years and remains in service with numerous commuter railroads across the United States, including VRE, MBTA, Caltrain, Metrolink, Metra and others. Over 50 locomotives were produced by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) in various configurations to meet the demands of passenger operations.

Designed specifically for passenger service, the F40PH is equipped with a head-end power (HEP) generator, supplying electricity to passenger cars for lighting, heating, and air conditioning. To maintain a constant frequency, the HEP units operate continuously at 900 rpm, giving rise to the locomotive’s nickname, “Screamers,” due to the distinctive sound of the generator.
