History

The Junkers Ju 52/3m was a prominent transport aircraft during the Second World War, serving as the backbone of the Luftwaffe's air transport fleet. Known affectionately as "Tante Ju" (Auntie Ju) or "Iron Annie", this tri-motor aircraft was initially designed as a civilian airliner in the early 1930s. Its distinctive corrugated metal skin was a hallmark of Junkers aircraft design, offering strength while minimising weight. When called to military service, the Ju 52/3m proved highly adaptable, performing roles from troop transport and paratroop deployment to cargo hauling, aerial ambulance duties, and even makeshift bombing missions during the Spanish Civil War. Its rugged reliability and ability to operate from rough airstrips made it invaluable across all theatres of war, from the frozen Eastern Front to the scorching deserts of North Africa. Despite its relatively slow speed and vulnerability to fighter attack, the Ju 52/3m remained in production throughout the war, with over 4,800 aircraft built. Its three BMW or Pratt & Whitney radial engines provided the power to carry up to 18 troops or equivalent cargo, while the fixed undercarriage and high wing configuration made it forgiving to fly and maintain. The type saw service with numerous air forces beyond Germany and continued flying in civilian service well into the 1980s, a testament to its robust and practical design. The g4e variant was a later production model featuring enhanced defensive armament and improved equipment to better protect these vital transport aircraft as Allied air superiority increased. These aircraft were crucial during operations such as the airborne invasion of Crete in 41 and the desperate supply missions to encircled German forces at Stalingrad in 42-43, where many were lost to Soviet fighters and anti-aircraft fire while attempting to keep surrounded troops supplied. Today, a few restored Ju 52/3m aircraft still take to the skies, offering passengers the chance to experience flight aboard this legendary aircraft, keeping the memory of "Tante Ju" alive for new generations of aviation enthusiasts.
